A thriving workplace – Who doesn’t want to work for one?

I’m a workplace psychologist based in Houston,  TX. A thriving culture may sound intangible and hard to achieve, but when it comes down to it, the things we really want from an employer are fairly universal. In one sentence:

We’re human, and we all have a need to be treated as such.

Leadership research is beginning to indicate that employee well-being is something organizations need to take seriously. We’re aware that the old management models of treating employees as little more than a cog in a machine are outdated and will never take an organization to the top of it’s industry. Employees are starting to demand more than just a paycheck.

Even though we have new research, most workplaces are lagging behind in terms of implementation. They using management models that are built on archaic foundations and expecting to somehow create cultures that motivate, inspire and encourage a new generation. This new generation of employees is expecting to find meaning in their jobs and to actually enjoy what they do. Shock horror.

In short, if you want a human team (read: we’re not machines) to demonstrate creativity, productivity, harmony and loyalty, then you need to treat them right. Simply put, the organization needs to find ways to demonstrate respect for the individual to truly get the best out of them. The organization needs to give-a-toss about their team member’s individual well-being and their lives outside or work. The employee needs to feel genuinely cared for.

Working with organizations, groups and teams is my first love. I’m trained as an Industrial & Organizational Psychologist and my research focused on employee well-being in organizations. Kate and here team were hired to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of a variety of learning and culture programmes (customer service, vision and values etc). The timelines were very tight as was the budget but Kate and her team did a superb job. The report is still being used today by my successor to guide business decisions regarding organisational development.
